Each year I look forward to the first sightings of these delicious fungi starting in early June. In the highest section of the road where the forests are thick and lush, the local people sell baskets of fresh fungi within hours of picking.
This past June, I decided to take the back road from Lake Atitlan to Antigua, and while passing through Patzun all traffic came to a complete stop. I got out of my car to see what was causing the delay.
A local couple was being married that day, and there was a procession of all the family members and friends marching slowly to the justice of the peace. While I observed this beautiful ritual, I caught sight of a basket of mushrooms at the roadside market. Most of the mushrooms are from the highlands areas, and I have seen and purchased them from Chichicastenango, Solola, and Panajachel.
I have also found them at the Antigua and Guatemala City markets. I do not claim to be a fungi expert, but I will share what I know.
Maybe you would care to join me next June for a Guatemala Mushroom extravaganza. The most common I see at the markets are the anacates, which look like chantrelles, but grow wild in the highlands.
