Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition: The general organizational structure of this course will be thematic, connecting the texts that they read over the summer with the texts that they will read together as a class.
The scaffolding for these texts will be focused on how authors connect method to meaning. As such, we will read poems, short stories, essays, etc. A loosely chronological approach to British literature with some American and international writers added will be interspersed with units on poetry, essays, and student-selected outside reading.
We will be studying background material on historical and literary time periods and movements, trends, and authors. Multiple selections by the same author will be used for individual or group projects or for literary papers.
Some questions are tied directly to prose passages or poems; others deal more generally with works the students have read outside of class. There will be frequent use of questions drawn from former Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition examinations to use both as practice exercises for the examination and as prompts to allow the students opportunities to practice various strategies for answering them.
Out-of-class writing assignments also generally fall into two types--those for which the teacher specifies the topic and those for which the students are expected to generate an original topic, frame a thesis, marshal evidence for it, and present it as effectively as possible.
These assignments will cover a variety of aims expressive, explicative, literary and modes narrative, analytical, persuasive.
